I understand your perspective on the importance of setting boundaries with normal-functioning elders. But that’s easier said than done for some people — and in some families, too. It’s a complex topic — probably needs it’s own post.

Because of my mom’s short-term memory problems, I can’t set boundaries with her — she forgets them after I tell her. If she didn’t have memory problems and acted the way this grandmother does, I would set boundaries on appropriate ways I will be treated. I would not accept nor tolerate abuse from a highly-functioning woman who is not exhibiting mental problems or Alzheimer’s.
