Funny Fridays: Because It Is Better to Laugh than to Cry!

September 12th, 2008

What’s the best way to describe a bachelor?
A man who never Mrs. a woman.

*************************

Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their lives.

When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day.

One day Barb said, “Rose, we both loved playing women’s softball all our lives, and we played all through high school. Please do me one favor. When you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s women’s softball there.”

Rose looked up at Barb from her death bed and said, “Barb, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favor for you.”

Shortly after that, Rose passed on.

At midnight the following Friday, Barb was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, “Barb, Barb.”

“Who is it?” asked Barb, sitting up suddenly. “Who is it?”

“Barb — it’s me, Rose.”

“You’re not Rose. Rose just died.”

“I’m telling you, it’s me, Rose,” insisted the voice.

“Rose! Where are you?”

“In Heaven,” replied Rose. “I have some really good news and a little bad news.”

“Tell me the good news first,” said Barb.

“The good news,” Rose said, “is that there’s softball in Heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before us are here, too. Better than that, we’re all young again.

Better still, it’s always springtime, and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired.”

“That’s fantastic,” said Barb. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news?”

“You’re pitching Tuesday.”

Eggs in basket

And possibly the best chicken joke ever . . .

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is leaning against the headboard smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on its face.

The egg, looking a bit pissed off, grabs the sheet, rolls over, and says, “Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question.”

To everyone in my TLeC community, have a great weekend! :-)

Check back on Monday for a new series starting about communicating with our aging parents.

    Linda,
I have so much admiration for what you do. I am always afraid to comment, because your words leave me so touched, and remind me of the 2 years I spent working in a geriatric hospital as a volunteer, learning to change sheets under comatose patients. All I wanted to do the rest of the time was LISTEN. This was history come alive, and people who NEEDED to be listened to. So mutually beneficial – until the day I’d walk in and the bed was empty. To this day I…

Well, thanks for the supremely excellent chuckles!
Though I stop by each time you post, this is the first time I’ve left a comment. Thank you. Indeed laughter IS the best medicine, a column, I believe that existed – or still exists in “Reader’s Digest!”

Thank you – and thank you for the beautiful comment you left for me the other day.

    Rita,

Thank you for your heartfelt comment! And for sharing your touching volunteer experience with me. I understand and have felt the heartache you were around, but also know the treasures you gleaned from the experience.

Keeping a positive attitude is a MUST for getting through life, no matter what our challenges. I’m grateful that I was raised with this important belief and want to share it with others.

I loved the column in Reader’s Digest (my parents got it while I was growing up) and I also loved Art Linkletter’s show (& book), Kids Say the Darnedest Things. Ring a bell?

You couldn’t have picked a better day to comment. My commenters have declined this week, and I was getting lonely out here in the blogosphere! I wish I had time to comment every day on all of my favorite blogs, but writing for TLeC has to come first.

Will be keeping an eye on your blog and book publishing progress, and comment when I can!

    Thanks so much!

    Hey Linda,
I love the chicken joke – I’ll have to share that one. Thanks for a smile at the end of the day.

    Hi Linda,

As you know I love your Funny Fridays. Again, you’ve provided smiles for me and your other readers.

The chicken joke is my favorite one for today.

    Have a great weekend!

    Barbara,

    Happy to oblige.

Thanks for coming by — so to speak ;-)

So funny that chicken joke! I just read through all your posts for the last week (this being the last one I read and wanted to comment on) and was enjoying the writing but not thinking it pertained much to me but all of a sudden I just realized in a few years it will be me. It’s never too early to start thinking of talking. Even now- so you know later.

    Hi Dr. Cason,

It’s interesting that some very important life skills (i.e. making a marriage work, parenting, caregiving) aren’t taught in school. Hence, my blog. Hope my writings help you in the future.
