About the Blog
Welcome to the Tender Loving Eldercare (TLeC) blog and community!
My goal for the blog is help you become a more knowledgeable and confident caregiver ~
- whether you are a new caregiver feeling overwhelmed or a veteran caregiver facing new challenges
- whether your care recipient lives far away or close by
- whether your care recipient is a parent, spouse, other family member, friend or neighbor
TLeC was created to help you progress on your caregiving journey with less worries and allow you to spend more quality time with your loved ones!
44 million Americans (21% of the U.S. population) are currently providing unpaid care for older friends and family. (AARP Public Policy Institute and ASU Research).
As in other major life stages (such as marriage and parenting), no one provides us with any training on how to deal with this important part of life!
I began TLeC first to share online what I learned while being sole caregiver for my aging parents since 2000. The blog is a place where family caregivers can read about, learn from, encourage and support each other. I want to learn from you as well, and very much welcome your comments at the end of each post!
After blogging for three years, I realized that writing is one of my passions, and began a freelance writing and editing business. Along with writing about eldercare, I enjoy writing about the baby boomer generation, health and wellness, technology, women’s issues and social media.
Last but not least, I want to increase awareness of, and empathy for, families in this stage of their lives — both the seniors (or as I prefer to call them “Golden Oldies”) and the younger generations caring for them. Compassion, communication and respect for all people are my guidelines for both living and caregiving.
I hope when you come here, you get something of value . . . . and leave feeling better than when you arrived.
Who is Linda Abbit?
I am the founder of Tender Loving Eldercare and a classic example of the Sandwich Generation. I hold a B.S. and M.S. in Education and am a daughter, wife, and mother — first to my son, and then “mother” to my aging parents.
I volunteer as the facilitator of a support group for adult children and spouses of patients with dementia through my local Alzheimer’s Association in Orange County, CA. In 2011 I started another support group for family members who are caring for loved ones who do not have memory loss. You can find information about this group on Meetup.com.
TLeC is dedicated to the memory of my dear father, Al Brodsky (1906 – 2005), and my beloved mother, Aida Ennis Brodsky (1909 – 2009). Yes, the photos at the top of the page are the three of us.
For fun (and stress relief) I dance, practice yoga and play mah jongg. I love to read and laugh, though not necessarily together.
One of my many goals is to see as much of this wonder-filled world as I can. I live in southern California with my husband and dog, Shyanne.
